In my opinion, not one of Boyne's best works, but it was interesting and I read it all the way through, although the ending was predictable.

I can't say that "This House Is Haunted" is all that scary, but I had a difficult time putting down this ghost story. The novel has a wonderful set up--Eliza Caine, a young woman who has recently lost her father, the only family she has left, finds herself in the employment of a family who happen to live in a spooky country manor. The family seems to consist of only 2 children; their parents are absent, but no one will explain why. Eliza soon learns she is the fifth governess for the children; nearly all of the previous ones died mysteriously. And from the moment she exits the train on her journey to her new position, it becomes apparent that a malevolent force is set on destroying her as well. Eliza decides she must face her fear and rid the house of the spirit who inhabits it and in the process she finds much more than she bargained for.

Eliza is a spunky heroine and I think anyone who enjoys gothic fiction (think "Jane Eyre" meets "The Turn of the Screw") will be as enthralled by this tale as I was.

Good old ghost story told in the best of writing by John Boyne. He has not disappointed me in any of his books.

An old-fashioned ghost story told using Dickensian-style prose. A sinister old mansion, creepy children, family secrets, and a very unexpected twist at the end made for a fantastic Gothic read. Perfect reading for a dark and stormy night!

The classic, slightly formal, Dickensian style the novel is written in perfectly compliments this wonderful old-fashioned ghost story.

New governess Eliza Caine is a wonderful character: self-aware yet sheltered, slightly progressive, immediately comfortable and gracious. While it might be obvious to some from the beginning who the spirit is, the fear comes from wondering how Eliza would manage to figure out how to defeat it.
