An almost cute, albeit dysfunctional family besieged by violent, weird circumstances.
Characters added to flesh out the plotline (otherwise how can you film multiple seasons based on a lone psycho momma's boy?)
Vera Farmiga steals the show as the wacky blood, mother, blood!

Just finished watching season 1, a great group of actors, very interesting show.
Vera Famiga is wonderful as Norma. She is flawed and makes a lot of mistakes, but is likeable, for the most part. I like the slow character development of Norman (since we all know where it is heading). I like Dylan's character too and his role as the outsider looking in, into that very strange mother-son relationship, but I don't really like the Dylan storyline. Overall, a great season. Looking forward to watching season 2.

I like psychological thrillers and this was right up my alley. That being said, this series has some disturbing scenes, relationships, and the like. Its not for the faint of heart.

I enjoy creepy thrillers but this was too violent and disturbing for my liking. I started watching the pilot, got to the rape scene and shut it off. No thanks.

A tense pshichological thriller. What childhood and parents accompanied by circumstances can do to lives. You either stop watching it after the first couple of episodes or it nails you to your chair. The irritating parts may have been done on purpose.

This is actually pretty good. Just finished watching season 1. The mother is starting to get to me a bit. At first I sympathized with her and her struggles but then I started to see there was something more a bit off with her. So many stupid mistakes, makes me grit my teeth at times. Some things are never meant to be shared with your kids, no matter their age. Mom doesn't seem to get it. There is a barrier between parent and child for a reason. Kids will always find a way to turn their parents problems into their responsibility, a real mind mess. So not liking Norma so much anymore... Waiting for season two but really enjoying it so far. Lots of stories within the story here so a series that's far from dull.

Similar to NBC’s Hannibal, Bates Motel takes a step back in time to delve into the origin story of one of fiction’s most reputable and psychologically disturbed killers, Norman Bates, in this contemporary prequel thriller. After the mysterious death of his father, Norman and his mother Nora purchase an eerie motel in the small town of White Pine Bay in order to get a fresh start in life - only to encounter a town of bizarre individuals (who are not who they appear to be) and that is full of many secrets lurking just beneath the surface. With plenty of allusions to Hitchcock’s masterpiece, it is so much fun to see just how Norman Bates slowly metamorphoses into the killer we know him to be. In particular, Vera Farmiga delivers 110% as Norman’s suffocating, emotional, and uncomfortable mother. Although the show starts out rocky and always teeters on the edge of full camp, the mysteries of the town, amazing character development, and suspenseful pacing will keep you hooked and dying to check out Season 2. If you are a fan of American Horror Story, The Walking Dead, or Penny Dreadful, then definitely give Bates Motel a shot.

Not bad. Some clumsy moments, but all-in-all it flows well.

There's a lot of TV shows out there with good development, writing, and acting for the main characters, but all the other characters are mediocre at best. This show on the other hand, is refreshingly consistent with everyone. I feel like I'm peeking into actual people's unsettling and dysfunctional lives. (P.S.: It's totally fine if you're not familiar with Hitchcock's film for 'Psycho' before you watch. It actually might be better if you haven't, given that it's made some people overly harsh toward a really exceptional show.)

I have to say that for me, Bates Motel is rather like Rocky Road ice cream: One of those delectable guilty secrets...that I just love! Vera Farmiga is spot on as Norma Bates, and does anyone else think that the actor who plays Sheriff Romero (does he possibly have a brother named...George??) bears a more than passing resemblance to Anthony Perkins? While Freddie Highmore might not have been my first choice to play Norman, I'm intrigued by these characters and the set-up for this series. I'm, looking forward to seeing where this goes in future.
