This movie was short and to the point. Girl has shady past, moves to Vegas, starts to make it big and then the rug is pulled out from under her. Although it has a great cast, the plot and writing were very basic and I almost turned it off after 15 minutes. I don't know if I would read Beth Raymer's memoir after watching this.

On the whole, an enjoyable picture, but I did have a few reservations about it. Above all, there’s an uncertainty of tone. I believe this is because this ideally is a “Runyonesque” story, but it’s made by a very cerebral (and mostly British) crew. Thus the story is drained of a great deal of “native” color and charm, and because it’s acted by a Hollywood “A” list cast, the potential for the grotesque is sidestepped completely. Much of the juice, surprisingly enough, is supplied by one of my least favorite actors, Vince Vaughan, who at least understands how to play on the edge of caricature without falling into the abyss. Catherine Zeta-Jones also shows a talent for it, but unfortunately draws back from full commitment. And Rebecca Hall (a woman of great gifts) plays “dumb” badly….so when we find out that the lead character is not actually a dumb broad it makes all the hair twisting and baby-voiced attitude seem completely unnecessary. Bruce Willis brings even less to the party. He is bland and predictable, when the role cries out for raffish and unconventional. All this to say that Frears really misfires here….he seems to have kowtowed to his cast and smoothed down any rough edges in the attempt to make a conventional hit. It is certainly NOT because he cannot relate to a purely American milieu. But it’s a LONG way from the grittier days of ‘The Grifters”, unfortunately.

Dink: So, I specialize in horse racing, hockey and baseball, but we bet on all sports here. NFL, NBA, the PGA, NCAA Football, NCAA Basketball, tennis, the WNBA, Little League World Series, the National Spelling Bee Competition, the Miss America Beauty Pageant, the... Coney Island Hot Dog Eating Contest. Pretty much anything, on which odds can be made.
