Small turns out to be more powerful than big in this hilarious story about outwitting a bully.

Lion bullies all the other animals until finally they can't take it anymore. They post an ad, asking for help. One animal after another tries and fails to defeat Lion. Can no one stop him? Finally, a rabbit arrives. No one thinks that such a small animal will be brave enough or strong enough to defeat Lion. But perhaps this rabbit is smart enough?

We love Latimer's art and his sense of humor, and this a great little tale about how strategy can be just as important as brawn in solving a problem. Who can stop Lion from bullying all the other animals? Tiger, bear, and moose all failed. Now it's up to a specialist: Rabbit. Weighing in at only 4 pounds to Lion's 1,770, it's tough to see how Rabbit will prevail. As an adult, I didn't even get what was happening completely until the end, which is a pretty good trick to pull off in a children's picture book!

Bullying is a problem for everyone, and it is everyone that needs to work together to stop one. Lion is a bully, he is strong, but less competent in other ways (which is a rare hint in picture books as to why someone is really mean to others). Those animals on the receiving end of this are too scared to stand up to him, and true to life, require outside help. This comes in the form of a clever rabbit. By looking closely at the pictures we can see a clue to his strategy, which gets revealed at the end.

The illustrations are simple, yet effectively show the problem without becoming too emotional. By keeping them objective, the author creates a more contemplative atmosphere for children, rather than an emotionally distressing one. Still, this is not an easy topic, and is something a parent should discuss with their children.

Lion vs. Rabbit is one of the better books regarding bullying, because it stresses the cooperation needed to solve the problem, rather than the problem itself.
