"In 1919, Kitty Weekes, pretty, resourceful, and on the run, falsifies her background to obtain a nursing position at Portis House, a remote hospital for soldiers left shell-shocked by the horrors of the Great War. Hiding the shame of their mental instability in what was once a magnificent private estate, the patients suffer from nervous attacks and tormenting dreams. But something more is going on at Portis House-its plaster is crumbling, its plumbing makes eerie noises, and strange breaths of cold waft through the empty rooms. It's known that the former occupants left abruptly, but where did they go? And why do the patients all seem to share the same nightmare, one so horrific that they dare not speak of it?"--Provided by publisher.

Simone St. James is great with atmosphere. I could easily feel the damp air that was eating away at Portis House, a grand, but isolated manor house.

Unfortunately, this story didn't live up to its potential. The ghosts are present, but not terribly scary. And honestly, the characters often behaved in ways that were quite unbelievable. The conclusion felt a bit too convenient, but also a bit open-ended (which was strange considering how much the author wrapped everything up!)

I'm not giving up on St. James; I just hope the next book I pick up by her has a little more spookiness going on.

I was surprised by how much I liked this book. So much so that I will try some of the author's others. I listened to it and I liked the accents done by the reader. I guess the story is kind of typical gothic with ghosts, big creepy houses etc. but I really liked the main character of Kitty Weeks. Quick read or listen, perfect for the commute.

This title is a ghost story, romance, and mystery all rolled into one. It is also full of interesting characters and has a very spooky, evocative setting. Despite all of that, the ending was just not as good as the author's previous titles, hence the slightly lower rating.

Very suspenseful and intense , more than a simple thriller thanks to the deep analysis of complex and unusual characters : it could be labeled "a psychological thriller" .

This author is a very reliably entertaining source of romantic suspense. I really enjoyed her first two novels, and this one ups the spooky factor with a very psychologically chilling ghost.

It's set just after WWI so also deals with issues of shell shock (she works at an asylum for former soldiers) -- all together, it makes for a great read. Highly recommended!
