Lydia Netzer is a surprising and refreshing new voice in magical realism. Her second novel tells the story of two souls destined for love since before their birth and their scheming mothers who designed them for each other. Cold and logical Diana and dreamer George make an interesting fated pair. An intriguing storyline punctuated with instances of little miracles and implausible events fits this novel perfectly into the magical realism genre. The characters are vibrant and interesting and the periodic flashbacks serve to flesh out their unusual and often tragic histories. Twists and surprises abound in this funny and charming novel; those who enjoyed Like Water for Chocolate will love How to Tell Toledo from the Night Sky.
