I simply adore ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK. I devoured it within a day, binge watching it on Netflix, and now I'm pleased to see the library pick it up, so I can share it with my mother and sister. More entertaining but still true to the reality that the real Piper Kerman faced in a women's prison, this adaptation never loses the right tone, hilarious but heartbreaking and ultimately profound and misunderstood. The characters are fully formed, free-standing, and three-dimensional, because they are real people somewhere in the world. These things you're seeing onscreen, no matter how far-fetched or unbelievable, really did happen. I was absorbed in the relationships in this series, not solely Chapman's, but everyone's stories. With such an exciting finale that left you hanging with bated breath, I cannot wait for the second season, hopefully coming in late spring to Netflix. For those with open hearts and minds, I wholeheartedly recommend the first season of ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK. (originally posted May 07, 2014)

Orange is the New Black is a comedy-drama that is based on a true story. Piper Chapman is a woman living with her fiancé in New York City who is in her thirties. She is sentenced to 15 months at Litchfield Penitentiary which is a minimum security prison for women. Upon arrival is the hardest for Piper. She has to learn the do’s and don’ts of prison and how to avoid/fix trouble. Her ex-girlfriend, Alex Vause, was sentenced to be in the same prison, so she and Piper reunite. There is a lot of conflict between them and Alex plays a decent role in the series. The show features many flash backs piecing together how Piper ended up being sentenced to prison in the first place. I think this show can be educational in some ways too, because people who have been in real prisons say that the show is very realistically displayed as a real prison would be. There is nudity and some inappropriate scenes in this show so be warned. Also, Orange is the New Black is Netflix’s most watched original series! 5/5 stars

Came late to this, thinking something this popular would be exploitative and crass. Boy was I wrong! As good as it's given credit for. So great to see such a full exploration of real women's lives. Here are all the people you never get to see in other dramas - black women, Latin women, Asian women, lower-class women, gay women, trans-women and most of all - older women. Almost stereotype-free. Everyone is given a detailed and sympathetic back-story. You end up caring about almost all of them, with a few exceptions for the villains.

And the treatment of sex, except for the first few moments of the pilot episode, does not feature gratuitous sex and nudity. The lesbian angle might have helped sell the show to Netflix and a male audience, but the producers give us a full exploration of women's lives and their day-to-day struggle of living in close quarters with people these characters would never have met unless they landed in prison.

I watched 3 episodes and returned it back to library. Not sure why series so popular. So much stereotyping of blacks, blondes and latinos in the series. Main character, Piper, can she be so self centered or clueless? She's in a prison not the country club. Got tired of her whiny dialogue.

As a male watching this TV series, I can say I didn't find it that interesting to start, although I will reconsider borrowing this after watching only 4 episodes just to kill time.

I can't believe anyone would be as clueless as this protagonist. She behaves as if she has no idea how to behave with anyone outside her own little circle of friends. I lost patience by episode 3 and returned this to the library. Clearly I am not the target audience.

The story model is clever. Like all good stories, the characters are broken in some way. Over time, their wounds are either healed or fatal. The wounds are what put them in prison and, at the same time, make the prison a dangerous place. The danger drives the viewers' interest in the story. Threats abound. Few themes capture the imagination as effectively as a human struggling to escape captivity. We are all in captivity to some extent and can identify with this theme on a visceral level. These are all ingredients of powerful drama.

The fatal flaw of the main character is that she is kinda dumb. She has book smarts but does poorly when confronted with life. Her lack of smarts propels her bad choices and gives the plot a feeling of inevitability. A sympathetic dumb blonde as a heroine is a nice break from the over-used superhero with unbelievable bells and whistles. Not being a lesbian, I could take a pass on the lesbian-love scenes.

I couldn't stop watching this show. I flew through the season. Watched it when I exercised, watched it when I cooked, watched it in bed before lights out. I was hooked. The nudity is overdone, but overlooking that it was very entertaining and found some of the characters really likable. Some of the events seem blown up for tv drama but others seem like it could be very realistic for life in the women's prison. Overall, a nice balance.

If you hate violence, avoid last episode.
Some stereotypes:Too many evil people are smart. Too many good people are stupid.
Blacks like to sing.

I LOVE this show! I loved Season One, and waited for about a year to finally see Season Two (it's SO GOOD, and it's very funny). I don't know how anyone (a couple of peole who reviewed here) could be bored with this show! Maybe they'er too shallow or jaded to "get it." The original book is also very good, if you need something to tide you over after you watch Season Two, until Season Three is available in DVD (maybe a year from now?)
