Everything you could possibly want to know about the history of climbing Mt. Everest by the British through the 1924 Mallory attempt. Also everything you could ever want to know about anybody who ever attempted to climb as well as some who thought about attempting to climb. It was a very interesting tale, but TMI for me. If you’re queasy, skip chapter 1. It’s a graphic telling of the story of WWI from a British point of view.
Every time we meet a new character, we go back in time to learn the background story of that character; especially concerning their involvement in WWI. I was listening to this book & that made it kind of hard for me to follow.
I wasn’t wild about this reader. He reads so very slowly. He’s British, so some of the words had an odd pronounciation that I didn’t always understand. This book didn’t need to be 23 discs long. If my player had the ability to play faster, I would have sped it up a lot.
I also checked out the book so I could see the pictures & the maps.
The film taken during the 1924 expedition was mentioned in the book; The epic of Everest. I was thrilled to find a copy at the library. It is very high quality & I thought it was excellent!
I also recommend another DVD that I watched after completing this book; The epic of Everest. The guy who discovered Mallory’s body, decided to recreate his climb.
Fascinating tale of courage, ingenuity, determination, pride, and focussed curiousity. Love the voice and accent of the narrator.
After the first couple of segments, I skipped over all the parts about the devastation and tragedy of World War I. A short introduction to set up the cultural context and the contrasts would have been enough.
Very surprised and proud to learn it was a Canadian who solved the riddle of Mount Everest, who figured out the best route, when he was still miles and miles away ! Three cheers for the colonies !
