The first great writer to write of the jail experience, since Jack London. Maybe you won't ever have to, having read this superior novel..long as you remember to be good (i.e. politically correct). This one might well be compared to Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment, it is that good. I remember seeing it on my father's bookshelf, and being impressed by him because of it.
John "Big Cheev" Cheever is better know for his stories, but he also wrote 5 novels, of which this is the 4th. In a departure form his usual unhappy WASPs plots, this is about a drug addict who kills his brother and is sent to the title jail. I think I should point out that the character is not named Falconer and there are no actual falcons in the book. I thought maybe the prisoner would take up falconry and that would, like, help him. Maybe someone should write that book.
Drug addicted professor Farrugut goes to prison for fratricide . John Cheever's novel is considered one of Time's top 100 novels. It seemed a bit dated for me as likely it was controversial in it's time but doesn't shock in this day and age.
