I think this game succeeded in the way Super Smash Bros. for Wii U did. It is competitive and has a high skill ceiling/ room for teamwork, and is a highly online based game as people have been dying for from Nintendo. However, it is also child friendly and welcoming for anybody to pick up and play. For people that can't aim a gun for the life of them like me, I can still put an effort into covering terrain instead of fighting the other team so that I feel I am contributing something. The game also offers motion control support, which I absolutely needed. Few shooters can claim to be as accessible and fun as Splatoon.
There is also a variety of available gear and weapons to choose from and unlock, not all of which are even guns. The gear comes with stat buffs, perks, and abilities but it's more of an aesthetic thing. The game's characters and setting have a big theme of being hip and stylish, so all that gear happens to look really good. From shoe shopping, to shirts, to hats, choosing your inkling outfit can be a game of its own.
But trust, the game does have a competitive side. The game finally features something Nintendo fans have wanted from other games for a while- a ranking system, with ranked matches. Your rank will go up and down depending on your performance each battle, and the game will group you with players closer to your rank for every battle. Ranked matches also feature other game modes than your traditional turf-war- game modes that require more teamwork and focus on the objective. Just entering ranked battles, one can see the competition rise.
The only thing people think is missing from Splatoon is a method of communication with the other players- like a voice chat or a messaging system. People tend to find that as something other shooters have delivered well and that Splatoon heavily needs- especially as a game based on territory control requiring so much teamwork. However, I respect Nintendo's decision to keep those things out, as many shooter communities turn very harsh and toxic. Letting people communicate with one another in a game people take so seriously would hurt their child friendly reputation, to say the least
I give this game a 9.5/10 rating. It really delivered what people wanted to see from Nintendo super well- and they did it uniquely in a Nintendo like fashion. If you are a fan of shooters, Splatoon may be your reason to buy a Wii U.
