This first volume, of what will come to be known as the definitive biography of America's top writer of modern fiction, outstrips James Atlas's noble attempt. It's keeping me up late at night. Bellow's life was very like his main protagonists': picaresque, full of fun, pathos, romance/heartbreak, tense and comic scenes, adventures. Philip Roth was right when he named him the best, above him and all others. If you're a Bellow nut, this bio will satisfy --- to the max!
