In a masterful standalone thriller by "New York Times" bestselling author of the Rizzoli & Isles series, Tess Gerritsen, a mother is haunted by a very old piece of music she finds in a strange antique shop in Rome.

The first time violinist Julia Ansdell picked up the "Incendio" Waltz in a darkened antique shop in Rome, she knew it was a strikingly unusual composition. The minor key and complex feverish arpeggios have a life of their own. But when she plays the piece, Julia blacks out and awakens to find her small daughter implicated in acts of surprising violence. When she travels to Venice to find the previous owner of the music, she uncovers a heart-stoppingly dark secret that not only dates back to the horrors of the Holocaust, but also directly involves a dangerously powerful family who would stop at nothing to keep Julia from bringing the truth to light.

A very sad story , good people get persecuted and killed during WW2 ,music connects the modern era with the past and when the modern character starts facing unusual events which seem to lead to how evil from the past can affect the present it gets explained away with a brain tumor and one feels cheated out of a potentially much more complex narrative. The promise did not deliver and ended in banal and the harrowing demise of the past characters is wrenchingly sad.No redemption other than the descendants of the evil doers being exposed.

I listened to the audiobook. The narrators do a very good job. The book is a great listen! And you can learn a little history regarding WW2. The book keeps moving along at a good pace. I couldn't quit listening to it. The characters (except maybe for the husband) seem well-developed. The ending was totally unexpected. However, I did think the ending was weak.

Simply a fabulous book. Exciting story line and historically significant. I rate it a 10. Great job Tess!
