In the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, Farrel asks the captain of the freighter he works on to go ashore once they reach the port of Ushuaia, a town in southern Argentina. He wants to return to his birthplace and see if his mother is still alive. For the past twenty years he has worked as a seaman. Having reached the cluster of houses where he grew up, Farrel discovers his mother is indeed still alive, but someone else has become part of the family.

An uncompromising director meets the inevitable failure to know the motives for human behaviour. He gives us an opportunity to think about the mysteriousness of it all. Not for everyone, but I'll remember this film for a long time.

you can't go home again.

a veteran seaman returns to his family home in a tiny, isolated town where he doesn't appear to be welcome. it seems that neither his mother nor his daughter know who he is.

this film of few words leaves much to the viewer to discern.

the director said of the films he enjoys making "....this kind of cinema. It's a shame it does not communicate to an audience in some way."

it communicated isolation, desolation, a stirring of memory creating the desire to return home, only to leave unfulfilled.

If you have the time, an interesting film that requires imaginative participation to fill in the blanks and make it worthwhile.
