From Cherie Priest, author of the enormously successful Boneshaker , The Family Plot is a haunted house story for the ages--atmospheric, scary, and strange, with a modern gothic sensibility that's every bit as fresh as it is frightening.

Music City Salvage is owned and operated by Chuck Dutton: master stripper of doomed historic properties and expert seller of all things old and crusty. Business is lean and times are tight, so he's thrilled when the aged and esteemed Augusta Withrow appears in his office. She has a massive family estate to unload--lock, stock, and barrel. For a check and a handshake, it's all his.

It's a big check. It's a firm handshake. And it's enough of a gold mine that he assigns his daughter Dahlia to personally oversee the project.

Dahlia and a small crew caravan down to Chattanooga, Tennessee, where the ancient Withrow house is waiting--and so is a barn, a carriage house, and a small, overgrown cemetery that Augusta Withrow left out of the paperwork.

Augusta Withrow left out a lot of things.

The property is in unusually great shape for a condemned building. It's empty, but Dahlia and the crew quickly learn it is far from abandoned. There is still something in the Withrow mansion, something angry and lost, and this is its last chance to raise hell before the house is gone forever.

I truly loved this story. I am not really a fan of modern horror but I do love the classics. This book had modern style writing but in the spirit of a good classic horror. It was very suspenseful and I couldn't put it down leading to me staying up until 3 am on a work night, but it was all worth it!

I typically do not read this type of book. I don't watch horror flicks for sure. Not even sure why I was drawn to check it out! That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed it! The characters were developed well enough to be engaging and the author was even able to keep me from closing the book and saying "Naw---I don't think so", even though the folks stayed in the house that all of them knew contained ghosts. Maybe it had just the right amount of escapism and scariness. I'd say if you enjoyed the movie Poltergeist, you should give this a try.

Compelling characters, a race against time, and home improvement in a creepy haunted house book that gave me goosebumps. Cherie Priest is known for interesting characters, realistic group dynamics, and fast-paced horror plots, and this book contains all three. If you loved films like “The Amityville Horror” and “The Woman in Black”, or want a good scare, you will enjoy this.

"When in trouble, when in doubt- run in circles, scream and shout."

"He said you couldn't compare a house to a living, breathing person- it wasn't the same thing. In her sentiment, that was the sacrilege, right there."

"My name is Dahlia Dutton, and I'm sorry about what's coming. I want you to know, it isn't up to me. I'd save you if I could, but I can't- so I'll save what pieces of you I can. In that way, you'll live on somewhere else. That's all I can offer. But I promise, I will take you apart with love... and I'll never forget you."
