Super fun! I especially love how the dialogue is written like an after-school special from the 80s. And as a child of the 80s, I loved all of the references and had flashbacks to my own childhood (minus the demonic possession). At 330+ pages it seemed just a *bit* long but other than that, I loved it.

Set in the 1980s, this is an engrossing (and creepy) pop culture take on an old horror trope. Although it suffers from pacing weirdness midway through, the ambiance as well as the running theme of the power of friendship make for an enjoyable read.

This is a book about exorcism. It is clear. There is no latency, hiding meaning in title.
It's also about friendship between teenagers and how real it could be, and what are you willing to do for the sake of your friend.

This story is genuinely scary and had me hooked from beginning to end. I read it a few months ago and it still gives me chills to remember it. If you're looking for something thrilling and you're a fan of the eighties this is a great read.

My Best Friend's Exorcism is absolutely wonderful if you grew up in the 80's, or (like me), you can't get enough of 1980's pop culture. Campy, but still horrific, this novel gives the perfect amount of scares without being too graphic or over-the-top. By the end, I felt compelled to call up my own best friend, which goes to show the emotional connection I felt to the characters and the situation. I'm not a huge fan of horror, but I'm definitely a fan of this book!

If you were to do a mash up of Stranger Things and Heathers, you'd get something like My Best Friend's Exorcism. Creepy, fun, and full of late 80s nostalgia.

A surprisingly lovely tribute to the power of friendship.

High school is hard, but especially so when your best friend is possessed by a demon. When Abby discovers there's more than meets the eye to the strange behavior her best friend Gretchen is exhibiting, she sets out to free her from the demon that has taken over.

The story if full of pop culture references from the 1980s and a compelling storyline that will suck readers in and not let go until they find out whether or not Abby is successful with her task.

I really want to give this book 4 stars, but when I compare it with my other 4 stars, it just doesn't hold up. With that being said, I really enjoyed it. It was fun and felt like the 80's.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book!
The author really hit the 80s teenager perfectly! Funny and creepy and touching all at the same time!! If you enjoy this one try Horrorstör by the same author! Its super scary once the scene is set!

Abby and Gretchen have been best friends since the 5th grade. But then in HS, in 1982, after a party involving alcohol and drugs, things begin to change. Gretchen starts acting differently. She’s mean. And there are all these strange occurrences begin happening that Abby comes to the only explanation that makes sense. Her best friend, is indeed, possessed by a demon.

My Best Friend’s Exorcism is nothing what I expected. I’m not familiar with Grady Hendrix’s previous work so I wasn’t expected a horror/humor story. I was expecting something that was just plain horror. It wasn’t really horror though either, more gruesome, if anything. I absolutely loved it though. It indeed felt like I was “watching” a campy horror movie from the 80’s.

(All of the 80’s references were amazing too, btw.)

Even though this book is about demon possession and an exorcism, the bulk of the story is actually about the friendship between Abby and Gretchen, and how no matter how bad it gets, Abby’s loyalty to Gretchen is unwavering.

The actual exorcism (which didn’t happen until the last quarter of the book), was pretty anti-climatic and pretty silly, in my opinion, and the story focused more on Gretchen’s terrible behavior leading up to it. (And it does get pretty gruesome.) While reading, it felt almost like the possession was just a metaphor for how truly terrible teenage girls could be to one another.

It was fun to read though and I recommend it if you’re into dark humor and you’re a fan of 80’s horror movies.
