A single mother turns up dead at the bottom of the river that runs through town. Earlier in the summer, a vulnerable teenage girl met the same fate. They are not the first women lost to these dark waters, but their deaths disturb the river and its history, dredging up secrets long submerged. Left behind is a lonely fifteen-year-old girl. Parentless and friendless, she now finds herself in the care of her mother's sister, a fearful stranger who has been dragged back to the place she deliberately ran from, a place to which she vowed she'd never return.

I really enjoyed this 2nd book by Paula Hawkins, more so than her first book.
I had read mixed reviews about it, most of them stating not to bother reading it but I only had trouble placing 2 characters as to where they fitted in and I thoroughly enjoyed the way it was written. The ending was a surprise to me.
I would recommend it - but that is my opinion.

Agree with the previous comment. The style of writing involves perspectives from several characters at a time. Each person puts their own view forward which is a partial truth and it is up to the reader to piece together these half truths. It keeps the reader engaged.

This book is difficult to follow, but well worth the effort. The best fiction that I've read this year.

I suffered through Part 1 of this book hating to give up on it. However, just could not finish it. Huge cast of diverse characters made their connection with each other very confusing. Waited for this book for 3 months only to be so very disappointed.

Total waste of time Read half and couldn't get any feel for what was going on except of women jumping into the creek

The female characters were generationally such victims. I really didn't like this book.

I found this book very hard to follow. There were too many characters for a book. Even the way it ended was very underwhelming. I was quite disappointed.

Paula Hawkins did it again! This book was a real page turner, kept me on the edge of my seat and did not disappoint. An excellent summer read!

Though Paula Hawkins' Girl on the Train was on the Bestseller List for weeks I did not enjoy reading it. "Into the Water," however was much more to my liking. I could really get "into" the characters and their relationship with the 'Drowning Pool." Nel, Lena, Jules, all spoke to me as did the other characters such as Katie, Louise, and Josh and the Townsends, (Patrick, Sean, and Helen.)
The mystery behind several deaths all involving the drowning pool was well thought out and well sketched. An interesting book well worth a read. If you loved "The Girl on The Train," I need hardly recommend this book you're going to read it. If you didn't like it I urge you to give Hawkins another chance and read this book.

"Seriously, how is anyone supposed to keep track of all the bodies around here? It's like Midsomer Murders, only with accidents and suicides and grotesque historical misogynistic drownings....." I laughed when I read this passage from Into The Water. The young P.C. Erin Morgan had perfectly summed up my reactions to this much touted second novel from the writer of The Girl on the Train. I persevered with the book, but struggled to finish it. In my opinion, there were just too many characters, too many diverse story lines, that seemed to take far too long to weave together, and way too much obvious water imagery for me to get invested in reading it. Ultimately the book ends as I suspected it would, but it was not a satisfactory read for me.
