In Rainbow Rowell's Fangirl, Cath is a Simon Snow fan. Okay, the whole world is a Simon Snow fan, but for Cath, being a fan is her life— and she's really good at it. She and her twin sister, Wren, ensconced themselves in the Simon Snow series when they were just kids; it's what got them through their mother leaving.Reading. Rereading. Hanging out in Simon Snow forums, writing Simon Snow fan fiction, dressing up like the characters for every movie premiere.Cath's sister has mostly grown away from fandom, but Cath can't let go. She doesn't want to.Now that they're going to college, Wren has told Cath she doesn't want to be roommates. Cath is on her own, completely outside of her comfort zone. She's got a surly roommate with a charming, always-around boyfriend, a fiction-writing professor who thinks fan fiction is the end of the civilized world, a handsome classmate who only wants to talk about words . . . And she can't stop worrying about her dad, who's loving and fragile and has never really been alone. For Cath, the question is: Can she do this? Can she make it without Wren holding her hand? Is she ready to start living her own life? Writing her own stories? Open her heart to someone? Or will she just go on living inside somebody else's fiction?

Written by Rainbow Rowell, author of Carry On and Eleanor and Park, Fangirl is about bookish Cath Avery, who is starting university, along with her extroverted party girl twin sister, Wren. Wren decides that she doesn't want to room with Cath, forcing Cath, who suffers from anxiety, to try to open up to the world. Throughout their lives, Cath and Wren were always bound by a love for the Simon Snow series, the Harry Potter of their universe. Cath is even a prominent fanfiction author, and is currently trying to finish her longest fanfiction ever, about the end of the series, before the author releases the last book. We get to see Cath struggle with anxiety, her love for fanfiction conflicting with her creative writing teacher's expectations, romance, her sisters developing alcoholism, and her father's depression. Fangirl offers a not usually seen look into the struggles with mental health people can face and the impact fandoms can have on your life, and has an incredible story to boot. I loved this book, and I bet you will to. 4/5 stars.

Oh I enjoyed this book! I listened to it in the car and would find myself sitting in my car at my destination just wanting to listen a little longer! I didn't want it to end!

A novel about a college freshman who writes fanfic about her favorite fandom, Simon Snow. This is the perfect book for anyone who has ever read or written fanfic, and loved it. This is a book within a book, a book about the joy and frustration of writing. I recommend this for lovers of fanfic, for those soon to start college, or for anyone who enjoys well developed characters.

A note on the narration-having two narrators really helps distinguish between what is happening in the story, and what is happening in Cather's, or Gemma T Leslie world of Simon Snow.

This is a lovable book! The heroine, Cath, is just the kind of self-depreciating outsider that you can't help but cheer for, and the author's deft referencing of the Harry Potter series, along with her own creation, the Simon Snow series, gives this book a very real world fan-geek feeling that many of us can relate to. Plus super fun romance.

Beautifully written and a great story for those who love fan fiction or have no clue what it is.

Too good! Love the home town references and the story within a story. Incredibly crafted and endearing. I love that Cath and Levi did not go through the cliche breakup. This novel will stay with me for some time.

I preferred Attachments, but I am always happy to see new work from local author Rainbow Rowell!

Amazingly real characters, superb writing, highly relatable. I have nothing but good things to say about this book and quite enjoyed it. I didn't love it to the level so many other readers I know have, but I certainly liked it and give it a strong endorsement and recommendation.

Look for this title as a downloadable audiobook as well! Another great novel about self-discovery from Rainbow Rowell.
