Carol Off’s story of one Afghani family’s excruciating journey through war and an even more
Excruciating bureaucracy is moving.
Off abandons her journalistic neutrality to ‘save’ a family she believes she jeopardized while in the field.
Using numerous connections ,and her own money .,,Off accomplishes the near impossible after years of grinding obstacles.
ThIs is a story that needs updating. Any reader hopes for nothing but the best for these
New Canadians.

Afghanistan is back in the news today: a possible war crimes investigation and performance of a new requiem. Carol Off's book was three things: a welcome refresher of how the country became a place of Canadian hopes and human loss; the personal story of an Afghan family living in the midst of the political and military conflicts; and a detailed look at the refugee system from one family's experience. All told from the perspective of an experienced journalist struggling with her role and responsibility. A very excellent and timely read.
