Masterpiece does it again with Joanne Froggatt's brilliant turn as Mary Anne Cotton, the first woman serial killer to be caught in England. The lives of women at that time were beyond dreadful and while there is no question she was a sociopath, you wind up having some sympathy for her at the beginning of her quest for a happy life because the times really were utterly miserable. Highly recommended we were riveted to the screen.

very good "tv type" drama...just long enough and kept my interest the entire time.

Too dark for me.

Interesting take on the character of Mary Ann Cotton, multiple arsenic poisoner of Victorian times. On the one hand she can, of course, be seen as totally heartless, even more so as the other women around her are portrayed as completely selfless. On the other hand, screenwriter Gwyneth Hughes shows the limited professional mobility a woman had in those times and with no access to birth control. Chances are that Cotton was just a sociopathic piece-of-work, but the drama does make her the tiniest bit sympathetic because of the terrible conditions she and all women faced.

The brilliant Alun Armstrong has a small part as Cotton's stepfather, and he comes across as compassionate as always. Jonas Armstrong (no relation) also appears here. He played opposite Froggatt in Robin Hood, so if you saw that series, it might be interesting to see these two in quite different roles.

Well worth a watch. Chilling true story of a 19th century British female serial killer. 3-part miniseries (1 hr each). Chilling to think how many people surely literally got away with murder before more modern criminology science! Also chilling to remember how few options women had during life in the 19th century.

A 3-hour investment on a story which doesn't quite interest me. So I quit.
