A haunting, richly atmospheric, and deeply suspenseful novel from the acclaimed author of The Enchanted about an investigator who must use her unique insights to find a missing little girl."Where are you, Madison Culver? Flying with the angels, a silver speck on a wing? Are you dreaming, buried under snow? Or— is it possible— you are still alive?"Three years ago, Madison Culver disappeared when her family was choosing a Christmas tree in Oregon's Skookum National Forest. She would be eight-years-old now— if she has survived. Desperate to find their beloved daughter, certain someone took her, the Culvers turn to Naomi, a private investigator with an uncanny talent for locating the lost and missing. Known to the police and a select group of parents as "the Child Finder, " Naomi is their last hope. Naomi's methodical search takes her deep into the icy, mysterious forest in the Pacific Northwest, and into her own fragmented past. She understands children like Madison because once upon a time, she was a lost girl, too. As Naomi relentlessly pursues and slowly uncovers the truth behind Madison's disappearance, shards of a dark dream pierce the defenses that have protected her, reminding her of a terrible loss she feels but cannot remember. If she finds Madison, will Naomi ultimately unlock the secrets of her own life?Told in the alternating voices of Naomi and a deeply imaginative child, The Child Finder is a breathtaking, exquisitely rendered literary page-turner about redemption, the line between reality and memories and dreams, and the human capacity to survive.

This book was excellent. The author set the book in moutains of Oregon and description of the setting was wonderful you felt like you were in the forrest. She created strong characters who were not only brave but lived through abuse and a hard life. One seeks lost children while she is not sure of who she is or where she came from. She is compelled to bring home all the lost children and give the parents closure if nothing else.

I really liked this book and could not put it down. I am actively searching other books or stories written by this author. It was so well written!

Amazing, emotional and redemptive - I put it down occasionally just to stretch out the experience. Would love to read sequels of the woman known as "The Child Finder." One of those reads that will stay with me...

Author's writing style is unlike others who pursue similar topics - finding missing children taken by abusive abductors. I don't like novels with flashbacks and this novel has oodles of them from the lost child, the child finder, the abductor, parents' stories, the ranger, trappers, etc. Everyone has a back story and Denefeld provides them. I think her investigative and journalistic background shows in the story's construction. Author provides a positive ending for all.

This was a good book - unfortunately there are probably more stories in real life then we would like to admit - where children go missing. Well written and you found yourself feeling like you were in the midst of these vast area. Leaves you hoping only the best for the Child finder so that she an resolve her life mystery.

The writing was good but this book wasn't for me. Too slow and predictable.

It's odd to say that a book with such a dark premise is so beautifully written, but it is. Rene Denfeld has her own traumatic history and has considerable social justice work, which lends a note of compassion to this literary thriller. The plot is terrifying in it's reality, but ultimately it is one of redemption and hope.

This is something I know: no matter how far you have run, no matter how long you have been lost, it is never too late to be found.

Naomi had tried to find peace in that. If what happened to her was too horrifying to remember, then that was how God wanted it -- He would store those artifacts in heaven for her, for delivery to hell.
