Coco received a small bit of controversy before its theatrical release. A boy who wants to be a musician despite his family's disapproval? And he has a journey in the Land of the Dead? It was quick to accuse Coco of being too similar to The Book of Life, another movie about the Day of the Dead and one I've sung high praises about in the past.
But you can't be too quick to judge these things, and it's foolish to claim that there can only be one definitive movie that celebrates a holiday. Just look at the ridiculous amount of Christmas films that have been made and cherished.

But is Coco the same as The Book of Life? To keep it short--no. It shares similar themes about connecting with loved ones and remembering those who have passed on, but aside from the two similarities mentioned above, Coco is its own movie. It's less comical, less mythological, has an entirely original score (no jukebox numbers), and it touches on bits of Mexican culture that weren't present in The Book of Life--like ofrendas and alebrijes. It also succeeded in making me tear up, the second Oscar winner this year to do so.
Either I'm growing softer, or these movies are getting better at pushing my emotional buttons.

Would I recommend one movie over the other? Absolutely not! Go watch them both. They're excellent.

Enjoyed by all , seen twice . The only glitch , the movie kept freezing briefly every twenty minutes or so . I was sure that my copy was a new one ,as there was no show of wear .

Coco is awesome! Honor the dead and do it with pride to preserve their dignity. This is awesome! Mesico is awesome. :)

Entertaining with great animation and great music!

The colour and animation is impressive, but at times a bit overwhelming. However, the story is well done: not necessarily an all-time classic, but with lots of twists and turns that aren't *too* predictable (OK, I guessed the main one well in advance), but also don't leave you with the exhausted "one darn thing after another" feeling. I would agree that it doesn't feel much like a kids movie, but that just moves it into the wider category of "family": the kids can laugh at the goofy dog, and the adults can get the more sophisticated references.

Incredible animation and a heartfelt story. I do wonder, however, how much of that story little kids get or should get. It's rather complex with going back and forth from the land of the living to the land of the dead (and I thought a bit scary too). But there's no denying the mastery of the Pixar folks--pretty amazing.

Usually can at least GET THROUGH a Pixar. Not this one. Boring. Trite. Cute to the point of being, frankly, a bit sickening.

Looks SUSPICIOUSLY like Book of Life produced by Guillermo del Toro, the current Oscar darling. While you are lining up for Coco DVD, check out Book of Life which is more FUN and colourful with an all-star voice-actors and Placido Domingo (!) behind the characters. Also look for Cronos, Del Toro's first Mexican breakthrough, an inventive "vampire" movie about a device that promised immortality.

What an amazing movie! The worlds that Pixar creates just get ever more lavish and intricate. San Fransokio, Zootopia, and this?! Simply amazing, and a wonderful story, to boot!

Colourful and heartwarming. I liked this better than The Book of Life, also centered around dias de los muertos. It's a quest story in which a kid follows his dream back to where he started, much like Kubo & The Two Strings or Moana ... both also recommended.
