For eighteen years Fran Benedetto kept her secret, hid her bruises. She stayed with Bobby because she wanted her son to have a father, and because, in spite of everything, she loved him. Then one night, when she saw the look on her ten-year-old son's face, Fran finally made a choice--and ran for both their lives.
Now she is starting over in a city far from home, far from Bobby. In this place she uses a name that isn't hers, watches over her son, and tries to forget. For the woman who now calls herself Beth, every day is a chance to heal, to put together the pieces of her shattered self. And every day she waits for Bobby to catch up to her. Bobby always said he would never let her go, and despite the ingenuity of her escape, Fran Benedetto is certain of one thing: It is only a matter of time.

Fran fell in love at nineteen. Her marriage was passionate, in both good ways and bad. When her dream life becomes a nightmare, she has to start over.

This is a powerful, evocative book, with strong characters and a thorough background. But UGH! That ending!

Love the book and the movie, just wish that it ended better and the outcome was better. Great read, one that you don't put down til your fully done. It's real and raw, so prepare yourself. Have tissues on hand when reading this book.

An engrossing read! I couldn't seem to put it down despite the lack of surprises in the plot and I rooted for Fran/Beth and her son Robert the whole way through.

Fair warning though: it is a fairly graphic protrayal of spousal abuse and the many reasons why abused spouses do not or cannot leave their abuser.

I liked the book, but I didn't like the ending. I guess it makes it more realistic, but it wasn't how I wanted it to end.

loved the book hated the ending.
Where is the justice? But these things happen in real life, just wish they did not.

From what I have read so far, this is a very powerful book. Also very hard to read, given the subject manner, so I am having a hard time wanting to pick it up. I have to be in a certain mood to read it; I am not reading it at the gym or beach!
