'You must think we out-of-towners are a strange and crazy bunch. Well, I guess we are. We dance a furious boredom', a young David Bowie wrote from his provincial bedroom to DJ John Peel in 1969. Five years later this driven, questing and flawed soul created his androgynous, fantastical rock star Ziggy Stardust as the ultimate revenge of the suburbs. Bowie's subsequent pioneering sexual experimentation cracked actor showmanship and embrace of every musical genre from glam rock to dum'n'bass have made him into the biggest commercial success in rock history since the Beatles and the Stones, yet this extraordinarily influential and chameleon-like rock icon has never been profiled in a biography which reflects his own depth and infinite variety - until now. So insightful and groundbreaking is Strange Fascination that Bowie himself has eagerly requested a copy of the first draft manuscript.

I am half~way through this book and it's terrific. The author discusses biographical topics that have been fuzzy and raises possible alternative explanations without claiming certainty. I appreciate this approach since one can never be sure of the details of any person's biography. I recommend this book to Bowie fans and historians.

Good book, very serious based on a doctoral dissertation. Only for really dedicated fans of DB.
