The Alternative Theatre Movement in CanadaBook - 1983
The alternate theatre movement, which flourished in Canada in the 1970s, was one of the most exciting phenomena ever to appear on the Canadian cultural scene. Influenced by radical theatre groups in the United States and in Europe, the Canadian movement originated in the late 1960's, partly as a result of the growing nationalism of that period and partly as a result of the dissatisfaction of young playwrights and authors with the direction of the theatre establishment. In this book, Usmiani examines the evolution of the alternative theatre movement in this country. She outlines the historical and cultural background, thus placing the Canadian movement in an international context.
