A shocking tale of perseverance, craftiness, and luck after the youthful Polish author was captured and imprisoned by Soviet soldiers in the early months of the Second World War. Over the next three years the author suffered starvation, disease, and abuse. After release to join the Polish Army in exile, he travelled by train through the central and southern Soviet Union. This memoir reveals the great suffering of the people in the Soviet Union under the communist regime. After the war, the author emigrated to Canada where he worked as an architect.
