Rare Earth

Why Complex Life Is Uncommon in the Universe

What determines whether complex life will arise on a planet, or even any life at all? Questions such as these are investigated in this groundbreaking book. In doing so, the authors synthesize information from astronomy, biology, and paleontology, and apply it to what we know about the rise of life on Earth and to what could possibly happen elsewhere in the universe. Everyone who has been thrilled by the recent discoveries of extrasolar planets and the indications of life on Mars and the Jovian moon Europa will be fascinated by Rare Earth, and its implications for those who look to the heavens for companionship.

If books like Carl Sagan's "Pale Blue Dot" have given you an inferiority complex then reading this book will raise you up again. Do you lay awake at night worrying about alien invasions from outer space? This book will put your mind at ease.
The library Journal review above gives an excellent synonymous of this book.
I read it back in 2000 when it first came out and loved every word of it. If you enjoy reading science books written for the lay reader you will enjoy it very much and won't find it at all tedious.
Reading this book will make you feel special to be a human being and very special indeed to be living on the "Rare" Planet Earth.

Agree with jeffers. This also a big picture look at what resources we actually have and what we can expect to accomplish. But a few years are under the bridge and science marches on, leading me to recommend Ward's 2015 book, "A New History of Life," a comprehensive look at the big picture of how life evolved to fit ecosystems and how mammals finally gained advantage. Fascinating and up to date.

Packed with information about the geology and natural history of the earth which is interesting on its own. Does get a bit tedious in places with many details.
