A heart warming coming of age story inspired by the author's own family experiences. As you get to know the main character, Valena, you are not only introduced to her family and the rural life they lead but you also discover the importance of her family history in shaping the person she will become. A perfect read for Black history month as well as being a wonderful story by acclaimed author Virginia Hamilton.
