There is a very touching episode in the television show Doctor Who in which the Doctor, through the magic of alien technology, travels into the past and makes the acquaintance of Jeanette Poisson, the future Madame de Pompadour. The episode is very poignant and moving (in itself quite unusual for Doctor Who) . On the basis of this one episode I determined that I ought to get to know a little more about this intriguing lady.
"Madame de Pompadour" is a biography written by Evilyne Lever. This book demonstrates that when it comes to biographies one had best choose one’s topic carefully. There is nothing gripping here; nothing to excite or electrify. Perhaps the greatest compliment I could pay this book is to call it sedate.
After seventy pages this book still hasn’t excited me. And it probably won’t. If you read this book --- be forewarned.
