George MacDonnell joined the Royal Rifles when he was seventeen and served for 79 months, much of that time as a prisoner of war of the Japanese. He advanced very quickly through the ranks and was a commanding officer by the time he was nineteen. This account of the war years and his life after leaving the forces is a quick read. He has written an account that does not dwell on all the horrible things he witnessed and endured during his prison years, but still manages to convey the sense of the terrible times they were. He went on to serve Canada in various governmental posts culminating in his role as Deputy Minister. No heroics here but a straightforward account of his life as he lived it.
